"Where have you been?" Jonah whispered to her. Lily Red shrugged and told him to watch.
The people, Their bodies. Most of them were turned away from Jonah, watching the band, but he could see it happen in their arms and fingers. Their fingers were shortening, losing joints, becoming puffy and fat. Their already pale arms became moon white and Jonah drew his knees up to his chest. He watched as one of them turned its smooth head slightly to spit on the ground. The saliva hissed as it hit the floor and the room was full of ghosts. The band could not hold their instruments and let them fall to the floor, but the music went on, grinding and full of hell. Jonah reached for Lily Red's wrist and caught only air.
...
The room was silent. There was none of the babble that had filled it when its occupants were all human. Jonah's heart froze over and dropped from its stem to his toes. He made himself continue walking, aware that he was the only thing moving in the entire building. His footsteps screamed off the corners of the room and slowly, slowly the ghosts began to turn.
Their eyes. Jonah looked into them and it was like looking at a thousand precious deaths. The city blood pumped and twisted in him like mercury. They were jealous of what he had and Jonah held his hands out in the old gesture that meant he had nothing. A doughy appendage slipped across his palm and Jonah broke for the door. They howled for him, their lost one.
thanks
