Society has come a long way in provision of services for the disabled. Theres still much to be covered, but increasingly, real-world services provide good accesswheelchair ramps, wide checkouts, subtitles and Braille versions of informational offer long overdue help to the disabled.
On the web though youll find a very different situationa world full of barriers set by poorly designed websites which practically exclude a large and growing slice of the population.
Its a long way from Tim Berners-Lees egalitarian vision of the web.
A recent investigation by the Centre for Human Computer Interaction at Londons City University and the Disabled Rights Commission (DRC) highlighted a shocking disregard for disabled web-users, with the blind most disfranchised.
But now, with a legal framework coming into place in the shape of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), many companies that in the past have given little or no considerations to anyone other than Mr. or Mrs. Joe Average are now having to think again....
But having attended a training course on the subject today on my current contract, I have to say that despite the four hours the high-salaried windbag rattled on about the disgrace and how it must be rectified, his hot-air, of course, does bugger-all to help the poor web-monkeys who looked on incredulously. Now perhaps if they had paid a disabled web-user to show us the way, well.... I despair!!
