Discordian metaphysics states that out of "pure chaos" came the artificial concepts of order and disorder. "Apparent order" is considered the "Aneristic Principle" and "apparent disorder" is considered the "Eristic Principle".
"Mind" is a concept making apparatus which we use to perceive reality. What we perceive or conceptualize are actually only maps or grids of reality which we have drawn by looking through "windows". Different philosophies use different grids. A culture is defined as a group of people with similar grids.
We view chaos (absolute reality) through a window and then relate it to points in our grid and thereby think we know reality. This grid is order. This is the Aneristic Principle.
Discordians see Western philosophy contrasting one grid with another grid, to come up with the perfect "map" of reality. But as Count Korzybski once said, "The map is not the territory". This is what Erisians call the "Aneristic Illusion". No grid has the monopoly on truth.
Disorder, on the other hand, is seemingly unrelated information viewed through a particular grid. But, disorder is also a concept. It is an idea about reality. The artificial concept of disorder or no-relation is the Eristic Principle.
The Aneristic Illusion is the belief that "order is true" and disorder is false. The Eristic Illusion is the belief that "disorder is true" and order is false.
The point that Discordians make is that ones personal perception of truth is a matter of definition relative to the grid one is using at the moment, and that Absolute Truth, "metaphysical reality", chaos, is irrelevant to grids entirely. Pick a grid, and through it some chaos appears ordered and some appears disordered. Pick another grid, and the same chaos will appear differently ordered and disordered.
The words of the Foolish and those of the Wise
Are not far apart in Discordian Eyes.
(HBT; The Book of Advise, 2:1)
An Illuminated Mind, Discordian, or the Western Zen master does not insist that any one grid is really true, or that none at all is true. As Malaclypse the Younger has said in Principia Discordia "The real reality is there, but everything you KNOW about it is in your mind and yours to do with as you like. Conceptualization is art, and YOU ARE THE ARTIST."
