I wish it was still the weekend. I'm not just saying that because I hate waking up early, either. I'd have to put this weekend up as one of the top ones. If I was allowed to drink at work (which I totally think I should be able to do) I'd be giving cheers to more weekends like that in the future. Anyway, yesterday I ended up going to the Morton Arboretum and on the way there I drove past this sidewalk. The sidewalk ends about 50 yards from a group of homes and at the end of the sidewalk was a sign that read "Sidewalk Ends". Is that sign really necessary? Before that sign was put up did people end up in a state of panic once they hit the end of the sidewalk? Did they drop to their knees and exclaim to God almighty "How will we ever make it home? Why God?? Why hast thou forsaken us??". Or did they just keep on walking, completely oblivious to the fact that they were no longer walking on sidewalk? From the looks of the worn out trail in the grass, those brave souls who walk the sidewalk were able to handle the situation just fine.
I rented a bunch of movies over the weekend and had a big marathon. You've probably seen them all, but I'm going to give my review of them anyway, so there *sticks out his tongue*
The Devils Rejects - Did you like House of 1000 corpses? Then you'll like this movie. Did you hate House of 1000 corpses? Then you might still like this movie. This is the sequel to House of 1000 corpses. Cops have raided the house and Otis and Baby are on the run from the law. They meet up with Captain Spaulding and try to keep away from the Sheriff who, through out the course of the movie, decends into madness and becomes just as bad as the killers. I absolutely loved this movie. I loved that the monsters were the heroes of the movie. You almost feel sorry for them at one point, until you think back and remember that they are a family completely devoid of humanity or compasion for anyone other then themselves. Because of this movie I now forgive Rob Zombie for putting that underground cybermutant dr. satan crap in what had the potential to be a good horror flick. I'm now looking forward to his next movie, whatever it may be.
Saw 2 - Saw 1 was overrated and the ending was complete crap. Let me quote myself from when I reviewed the first movie.
"Disappointing, it had potential to be great, but fell terribly short. If they focused on the dudes in the room, and dropped Danny Glover's side story all together, it could have been scarier. It could have been them trying to solve harder and more disturbing puzzles as they make their way through an elaborate trap while the faceless badguy torments them. End it with one of the guys surviving but never making it out of his prison and endlessly tortured. All the while the badguy walks away to look for more victims to play with for the sequel. I won't give away the ending for any of you who haven't seen it, but it made me groan with disapointment."
They did it right this time. A group of people in a house filled with traps specifically tailored to each individual. A 2 hour time limit before they all die as their insides liquify from the nerve gas they've been breathing. A cop sidestory thats an integral part of the movie instead of filler shit. An ending twist that is up there with the Usual Suspects "Keizer Sose was really the crippled guy all along" ending. I won't spoil the ending. I'll just say my request to have it end with a guy locked in the prison and endlessly tortured was fulfilled.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose - This movie was advertized incorrectly. It was not a horror movie. Sure there were horror elements as they recreated what Emily was going through, but this was a courtroom drama more than anything. There was even a quote from some critic on the front of the dvd case saying this movie was as scary as the Exorcist. Say what now? The dude who wrote that needs to get fired immediately. He's obviously taking bribes from film studios. So what was it about? Emily Rose was a girl thought to be possessed and she ended up dying because the exorcism failed. What follows is a trial of the people vs. Father Moore. Was she really possessed? Or was she just psycotic with bouts of epileptic seizures. Was an exorcism the only way to cure her, or was Father Moore in gross negligence of her health and she should have been treated with drugs? Watch the movie and make up your own mind.
A History of Violence - I heard some good things about this movie so figured I'd give it a chance. What would happen if you found out husband/wife/so wasn't who you though he/she was? That's what this movie explores. Mild mannered Tom Stall isn't who you think he is. He's really Joey Cusack, a vicious killer with ties to organized crime. For almost 20 years he thought he left that life behind, until an armed robbery at his cafe brings him into the spotlight. Now the mob is after him, and his family finds out about his past. Tom needs to cut his connections with the mobs permanately, while his family needs to deal with the fact the man they've known as husband/father is a stranger. Good movie. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for an action/drama. Its more drama then action. So don't pop it in expection lots of guns battles and car chases.
War of the Worlds - The original movie is a sci-fi classic and one of my earliest movie watching memories. This movie was action from beginning to end. A great popcorn flick and I wish I would have seen it in the theaters. There were a few annoyances (lightning fries all electronics in the area, but camcorders still work, wtf?). I forgive them though, because the tripods looked cool and it had lots of fire and explosions. I took away one very useful piece of information from the movie if ever aliens come down and almost wipe out humanity. Boston is apparently indestrucable.
Wedding Crashers - Another movie with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in it. I'm suprised Ben Stiller didn't make a cameo somewhere in the movie. This movie had some hillarious moments that had me cracking up, and it was a sappy love story too. Fun for everybody! Plus Cristopher Walken was in it. How can you go wrong? Oh, and Rachel McAdams is smoking hot.
That's it, my movie marathon review. ttfn
