So i went back through my latest posts and something occurred to me ... I am acting like a 12-year-old who got dumped by his first girl friend! Good god how sad!
Anyway, here is a more friendly post that will hopefully be the start of a new direction. In 9 days I head back to Comic Con. This is a huge treat for me as I will again be presenting on a few of the CAC panels. Also, in August, so long as everything works out, I will be on my way to Chicago for Wizard World and more comic discussions. I am really hoping that I can begin to turn this into something more than a simple hobby. I love reading, writing about, and discussing comics and their place in the literary catalog.
It's ... (shit, gotta teach!) I'll finish this in a bit!
Aaannnddd I'm back ... now where was I ... oh yes I remember ... comics.
I wrote my masters thesis on the naratological similarities between between traditional Jewish folk legends dealing with the Golem (man made of clay) and Superman Origin stories. The entire project was so much fun to work on, 80 pages of the best stuff I had ever written. And I want to keep that vein of scholarship going. This summer I get to participate on two different panels, a closed session with just scholars to discuss the future of comics research in our prospective fields and an organizers panel talking about CAC (comic arts conference) and the progress we have made over the past few years.
This is, perhaps, one of the greatest opportunities I have ever been given, but it is refreshing to sit in a room filled with people who believe as I do that comics are more than just trash literature that you buy for kids to keep them busy. The visual rhetoric that must be decoded in order to gain a full understanding of all the emotion and weight that is in a comic story alone is mind boggling. And to top it all off I get to go hand out (hopefully) with some beautiful SGs and (God willing) Alison Mack (it's true I have a never ending love for her! Marry Me Please!).
This is going to be four days of pure, unadulterated geek-gasm, and I can't wait. Last year was the first time I attended Con and it was mind boggling. This year I think I know what to expect and will hopefully be better prepared. My one goal is to have Max Brooks sign my Zombie Survival Guide again (the one he signed last year was stolen! Damn criminals!) and Robert Kirkman to sign a zombie Munny doll I designed based on the art work for Walking Dead. Oh how I love all things zombie!
This is going to be a great time and a great experience! If any one out there is SG ville is heading out there as well and you want to get together for drinks one night let me know.
Cheers,
Price
