So...to all those "soft" right wingers out there... those folks that continue to say they are "conservative" and then shrug and act as if that a) somehow makes them morally superior (so they don't have to defend there position with anything but an artificial righteous indignation) and b) argue that this country was built on a judeo-christian system... I say to you....
I wish... I truly wish.. you were conservative.
I wish you looked at limited natural resources and said they must be protected for us and future generations.
I wish you looked at our soldiers and said Life is precious and once these kids die there is no bringing them back so we better be damn sure the mission is sound, necessary and they have all the equipment they need.
I wish you believed that since we live in the wealthiest country in the world (supposedly) that running a national debt is unacceptable.
but...you don't...
The conservative party has been over-run with ideologues who treat politics like sports, believe in an "us against them" strategy in every political arena - even when dealing with debate within their own party, and the most two faced political posturing in the history of our country.
Cases in point...
Will Bush roll back his tax cuts to the wealthy to pay for The reconstruction of New Orleans or the cost of Iraq... uh... I'll give you three guesses and the first two don't count...
"In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, President Bush and Republicans in Congress have refused to consider rolling back the $336 billion in new tax cuts that the richest 1 percent are slated to get over the next five years. They say we need to pay for reconstruction not by asking the wealthiest to sacrifice just a little bit, but by massive cuts to spending. And now we see what that means: The Navy Times today reports that those cuts "include trimming military quality-of-life programs, including health care" . . . This, while troops are fighting and dying for our country in Iraq.
. . . The specifics are ugly. They are, for instance, asking troops to "accept reduced health care benefits for their families." Additionally, "the stateside system of elementary and secondary schools for military family members could be closed."
Base closings, lower pay for soldiers, cutting healthcare services for Veteran and ACTIVE troops.
It's like he's choking our soldiers to death with a gigantic yellow ribbon.
But if I want the soldiers to come home and only be sent to war as a last resort ...somehow I am against the troops? What?!?

The they nominate a conservative legal analyst from the Reagan admin who has written briefs about undermining women's rights, and I don't mean just the hot button abortion issue... I mean simple things like equal pay... the dude is AGAINST equal pay laws.. you know why? Because "barefoot and pregnant" is a conservative value. That's why.
Put Abortion, the environment, anti-discrimination, racial equality and all the contentious issues that, believe you me, Roberts will side against time and time again, and recognize that these are not the main reasons they want him in. The main reason is because he will always side with a corporation that is getting sued for negligence... always... the other issues are just window dressing... his real mission is to stop people suing DOW if they get cancer from creek water... those are his marching orders.
And what cold be more conservative and Christ-like than making sure a pharmaceutical company that releases a drug it knows will kill 100,000 people... never sees a dip in it's stock price.

and let's not forget Katrina..you remember her? She's Rita's little sister.. you met her two weeks ago.

- Nice huh? How many Ds do you see? Um... lemme help you out... none.
This is how modern conservatives "curtail spending"
Now as for the Judeo-Christian ethic part...
There is no such thing.
Judeo-Christian is a term used to describe a religious system from the middle east in a historical context. It is not helpful in describing the philosophy of these two fuzed thought forms. Now keep in mind I am addressing the common usage of this term not the Harvard comparative religions class definition. Because this what is used today.
The ethical/moral/religious system of the "Judeo" part..refers to the old testament. Which is filled with God supporting wars, laws involving stoning, human sacrifice and the ten commandments (which aren't really the ten commandments but we'll get to that)
The ethical/moral/religious system of the "Christian" part - refers to the New testament. Which is all about the Son of God saying.. Love thine enemy, blessed are the peacemakers and let he who is without sin cast the first stone... that kinda stuff
These two thought forms couldn't be more different. And the people that having been selling this system dont seem to care enough about it to study it. Which makes sense since they really only use it as a Point of Authority and people like that hate scrutiny.
Here's some examples... (by the way I am in no way attempting to undermine either of these two thought forms..only the way they are used together to support an ideology that respects neither)
Old Testament: Here's the Ten commandments that certain groups want to post in front of every courthouse in the nation... (as related to the people through Moses)
EXODUS 20
1 And God spoke all these words:
2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
3 "You shall have no other gods before [a] me.
4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
13 "You shall not murder.
14 "You shall not commit adultery.
15 "You shall not steal.
16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."
18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die."
okay... and now... at long last.. The REAL ten commandments...
EXODUS 34 - these are the ones that were ACTUALLY on the stone tablets....
14 Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
15 "Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices. 16 And when you choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, they will lead your sons to do the same.
17 "Do not make cast idols.
18 "Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Abib, for in that month you came out of Egypt.
19 "The first offspring of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. 20 Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem all your firstborn sons.
"No one is to appear before me empty-handed.
21 "Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest.
22 "Celebrate the Feast of Weeks with the first fruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year. 23 Three times a year all your men are to appear before the Sovereign LORD, the God of Israel. 24 I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your territory, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the LORD your God.
25 "Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast, and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Feast remain until morning.
26 "Bring the best of the first fruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God.
"Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk."
27 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel." 28 Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenantthe Ten Commandments.
Hunh... I don't remember seeing anything about wheat being written on the big concrete slabs they were trying to park in front of the courthouse in Mississippi...
For the record God is on to something here... wheat is something we could all remove from our diet.. try it... you will lose weight and if you have allergies they should lighten at least a little. But I digress...
In the King James version you will find that anyone who breaks these laws "Surely shall be stoned to death"
Whichever version of the commandments you ascribe to, it is a serious "law and order" document! it's hardcore... BUT..how does it compare to The Christian New Testament?...
Well... it...kinda doesn't... The New Testament obviously has some similarities because it is based on the former...however those similarities are tenuous and probably based more on editing than on actual agreed doctrine since Jesus tends to go on and on about stuff like...
Mark 10:21-Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
Acts 20:35 - In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' "
John 8:7 - But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."
and of course the Beatitudes...
9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
And most importantly... and in total contradiction to the modern conservative system..
43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.
How do you honestly say you believe that and then launch a preemptive strike?
How can you say you believe ANY of that and cut funding for healthcare? For anyone? How?...seriously
How can Bush use terms like Dead or Alive, sign the death warrants of mentally handicapped people (which he did numerous times as the Governor of Texas), How can he okay the use of cluster bombs in cities, near homes filled with children if he Truly believes these things?
The short answer is he cant ..because he doesnt. And the righteous indignation of the religiously pious in this country would be better spent saying not in our name than God Bless America because God... should be in the business of blessing everyone..no matter where they were born. No matter who their leader is, no matter how brutal their rulers are and no matter what color they believe God is.
Lastly...We do not live in a Judeo-Christian country. We live in a country where freedom of religion is guaranteed. We live in a country where individuals are protected from the majority by rule of law. Which is very important for Neo-christians to understand. One day... they will be out numbered by the Buddhists or Muslims living here and it will be important that No religion have the power to establish a stranglehold on the government. If Laws are written today to allow for the display of the Ten Commandments then tomorrow those same laws could be used to display any other deity or rule set ascribed to the ruling religion of the day.... which in ten years will be... Scientology... And there will be mandatory screenings of Battlefield Earth in schools.....calm down Im kidding
