Did ja ever...?

Did ja ever look back on your time in high school and think... maybe it wasn't as bad as I remembered. Maybe In my youthful desire to be accepted and admired I overvalued certain peoples opinions and, if I really was honest, It wasn't alll THAT bad....

My Dad just moved into a new house and he discovered "a few" boxes of my old stuff from my childhood and my young adulthood and thinking I might want them... he mailed them to me... It turns out that by "few" he meant THIRTEEN! All of them jammed tight with old notebooks, Star Wars figures, yellowing copies of MAD magazine (with notes that some budding comic made in the margins) pictures, posters from my first plays, an award for first place in "The Pinewood Derby"... yay me...

SO I have been in a state of Nostalgia induced shock all day! I found this great note where the girl of my dreams wrote me from camp and said it will never work out and then asked me how my summer was... oh joy... I found a utility belt I had made when, at 10 years old, I decided I was going to be a Superhero when I grew up and I would probably need one... It had pouches with throwing stars, M-80s and a compass... awesome! And just in time for me to go fight crime! I think I hear some outside.. no..wait.. that's just the neighbor's cat. Ttthhhhwwwwt! Rowr!

I have only had one High school year book with me. It was from my (second) graduating year and being the last one, it's the one I took out to L.A. when I moved/drove out here. The rest where AWOL until now. Not only do I have my Chicago High School ones but I have my Kentucky one as well AND my middle school year books. Man! I had totally forgotten so much of that whole experience. They say that "the guarantee of failure in life is success in high school" and if that's true It's no wonder I'm doing so well now because so much of it sucked! Like super sucked! Like magically de-suck-cious!

But I tell you I wouldn't change a thing because if it hadn't have been hard I probably would have stayed close to home and never struck out on my own. 16 days after graduation I packed my clothes and a few essentials in my car and made a Bee-line for L.A. and as much as I love Chicago I never really looked back because I knew there would be no success for me there.

So I guess big parts of our youth are supposed to suck. Otherwise we'd get too attached and wake up one day trapped on a hamster wheel that used to look like a merri-go-round.

I'm staring at a bunch of evidence of a life I ran from and I feel really excited. I've been reminded that whether it's the carrot our the stick that gets you on the path doesn't really matter as long as you get going... and more often than we like to admit... it's the stick.

Even if the stick's name was Michelle... and you still kinda miss her

I try not to go back too often otherwise you remember just how cushy it was there. Comfort can be dangerous and can also feel good when its a bed your used to but shouldn't be in.
