I chose marine bio largely because of the field work. I like diving and being on boats and all that Steve Zissou sort of stuff. I've gotten to do quite a bit of field work already (I was a lab tech for Stanford's marine lab) and it was great (if you're into being cold and wet and sea sick, which I am). I'd imagine that if you go into genetics you're pretty much just wearing a white coat and holding a pipette most of the time.

You could do genetic work related to marine biology. There's a faculty member here at UC Santa Cruz that's doing genetic studies on fish to work out their phylogeny. Members of his lab just went down to Mexico to go spear fishing for data. They just camped and killed fishies for a couple of weeks and now their going to be figuring out how closely related those fish are. It's not quite the same as finding a gene therapy cure for cancer but it does involve cold-wet with genetics.
