Welp, I'm not proud to admit it but I broke down and went to see Avatar. As expected, I wasn't too impressed. I have absolutely no idea why all the critics are going apeshit over this movie. I mean, right now it's on www.imdb.com's top 250 movie list. In my opinion this only furthers the theory that humans are getting stupider. The rave reviews do nothing but show that reviewers can be enthralled by bright lights and pretty pictures. Of course the animation is cutting edge and very well done, but great animation doesn't make a movie.
Avatar reminded me a bit of Princess Mononoke. A man tries to make peace between intrusive humans and the creatures who live in tune with nature. However, everything Princess Mononoke got right, Avatar got so wrong. The main character is stupid and impulsive, the dialogue is stale and poorly written, the acting leaves much to be desired and the movie feels like it's forcing it's message on the audience. Not to mention the movie is close to 3 hours long. This wouldn't be too bad if the first half of the movie wasn't just an excuse to show off all the "amazing" animation. They essentially did in 2 hours what should have been done in 30 minutes.
To sum up my rant: Avatar is a poorly written, poorly acted film hidden behind some nice looking animation. I find the fact that everyone thinks it's such an amazing movie very disheartening. This is, of course, just my opinion. If you loved the movie, power to you. I'll just probably never take any of your movie suggestions seriously.
