Not Another Love Poem
Old Valentines tattered and torn
left in an old box to rot with a
collection of faded memories
of high school competition
boys chasing girls, girls chasing boys
going for the gold, foil that is
acting as trim, a shiny addition
to a letter leading lovers' lusts
toward a constant reminder
of school yard desires and
puberty out of control.
These cards use such trite sayings
anything to keep a lover's attention
long enough to satisfy those raging hormones
"you are such a sweet person,
have a great year. - Lindsey"
followed by the stereotypical
heart with an arrow through it
and those echoed x's and o's.
And I began to wonder when
love became symbolized by
stops and pitfalls and
a shot through the chest which
means death, but who
cares anyway when "you're
such a nice guy, stay sweet. - Ashley."
Whatever happened to romance
like Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers?
A love so violent, that even
death could not hinder it.
Instead love was replaced
by Valentine's Day and the condom,
a message slipped into a high school locker
finalized by a Trojan dropped into a waste container.
"Hugs and kisses, and a smile for
the rest of the year. - Stacey"
