Sometimes it takes a night out with good friends and music to restore me. I had an amazing night out Tuesday night--my friend Steven came down from Boston with a bag of delightful herb then we went to see Tackhead play.

Everyone I talked to about the show said the same thing: "Who?"

Tackhead is made up of Keith LeBlanc, Doug Wimbish and Skip McDonald...

The second day back at work is a whole lot easier than the first. But the important thing is that I had a fucking blast in Europe for the last two weeks.

Here's some quick highlights, pix will follow soon:

Berlin: that whole city rocks. It just blew my mind that I spent almost all of my time in parts of the city that had...

I am now officially in "GET ME THE FUCK OUT OF HERE" mode as my last day of work before vacation approaches. Damn, this place is driving me insane, or maybe it's the ephedrine?

I just need to rant about my abusive boss who is taking a sabbatical for the entire fall semester. Several times over the last six months I've spoken to him about...

One week from today I leave for my two week trip to Europe. I arrive in Berlin Monday morning, then it's on to Prague, Vienna, and Budapest over the next two weeks.

It's going to be fantastic. As soon as I'm done here, I'm off to B&H Photo to buy me a new digital camera. I'm pretty excited about that on its own.

So here's...

Yow. It's been a while.

Now that August has hit, things are suddenly very calm around the library. Just a few hard core researchers, and even they don't stay all day.

I've been reading some excellent books about Eastern Europe--I'm midway through a novel by Arthur Schnitzler that's really good. I've been watching old German silent films--The Golem, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, etc. It's going...

Now I'm getting excited about my upcoming trip to Eastern Europe in August. Me and my lady are flying into Berlin on August 15. A friend of mine from Portland has been living there for a couple years, so it'll be great to get to see what his life is like there. I also just finished reading Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories, which is a phenomenal...

Fantastic 4th weekend. I went to see Psychic TV play the Bowery Ballroom last Saturday. I can think of no better way to celebrate America than attending a show by Genesis & Co. He looked a lot better than I was expecting and the background video showed his recent surgeries. They played Roman P. and Godstar, which are my favorites from that period. Some of...

Holy crackers, I have been through the wringer.

I got back yesterday from a weekend in the Hell that is Orlando, Florida. It was the annual conference of the American Library Association, which can usually be a blast but Orlando was a real drag. Too fucking hot and too far to go between meetings. Everyone was so spread out that I ended up missing a...

CONGRATULATIONS! Tenure! Woohooooo!!!!
biggrin biggrin biggrin

Sounds like you had an INSANELY busy conference!

Hey, thanks for the bookstore tips! My main passion is for Edward Gorey books, but my ex-bf, who is much more sophisticated about his book collecting (and solvent as well wink ) is always looking for places to browse for treasures. His sister own Trupenny Books, out of Tucson.

I am LOVING New York so far. I am in midtown, for the summer, hoping to move in a few months, perhaps to the Lower East Side or Clinton... we'll see. You are certainly in a great location!

Another week of crazy ups and downs. Still flying high on securing tenure at NYU but dragged down by the fact that a lot of the day to day bullshit remains the same. The next item on my list is to get myself nominated for the Grolier Club--a seriously uptight club for rich book collectors in a townhouse on the upper east side. I have...

Congrats on your tenure!

So you are a rare book afficionado? My best friend/ exbf is as well; his sister owns a rare/used bookstore in Tucson. I'm new to NYC; any tips on where to find biblio treasures??

Thanks,

I'm finally back from my California Love Jam Holiday in the Sun. I physicaly returned early Monday morning, but it's only now I feel I'm mentally back home.

My time in San Francisco turned out to be much tamer that I had imagined. I saw a couple of old friends for dinner and ended up not leaving until very very late. I foolishly smoked up...

Holy bejeezus, what a week.

On Monday I got the official news from the Dean of Libraries that my tenure was approved by the university provost.

As of September 1, 2004 I will be a fully tenured faculty member. That's such a huge thing I cannot get my brain around it. Job security for LIFE. I mean, I'd have to do something pretty outrageous to...

Went to the Valerie Steele lecture on the history of the corset at the Goethe-Institut last week. She was great and had some excellent slides that showed the whole range of corsets from the Renaissance on down. I've got to check out her book on fetish fashion (Fetish : fashion, sex, and power. Oxford UP, 1996).

Had a pretty fantastic 4 day weekend--an early blast...
