I find it amusing that all the people closing Starkey Road tonight are sic,k of working at the coffee shop. The evening began with a quiet, low key, shielded animosity towards working, and slowly degenerated into an open tear of "fuck this" every five minutes. You have to admit, getting paid no more than 7.00 an hour no matter how much time and effort you've put...

You shouldn't delay on applying to grad schools. You don't want to be caught in the "I'll work another semester to save up" mentality. Those are the people who are still talking about finishing college when they are in their 40s and have done nothing with their life. I'm not saying that you will do that but too many smart people don't follow their dreams because they are always waiting for the key time. -dave
Thank you everyone for your comments the last couple of days. They really meant a lot to me. I've been very lucky my entire life, because I've never really lost anyone who was especially close to me. My grandmother wasn't as close to me as my father's parents are, but the whole situation really brought home how much I appreciate my family, especially my parents....

children wake up, and hold your mistake up, before they turn the summer into dust
My grandmother died last night. This morning around 10:00 my mother called to tell me. It's been coming for a while now. She'd been suffering from terrible memory loss, and she was growing weaker and weaker. The last time I saw her was two summers ago when we visited family...

Sorry to hear it.
Ugh, I have a food baby. We just ate Outback and I'm incapacitated. I'll have to give birth here in a bit.
I saw March of the Penguins today at the Grandin. It was quite good. Actually a bit more educational than I thought it would be. I thought there would be more of a story that they created using penguin phootage, but it was...

What demands saying regarding The Devil's Rejects? Hmm. How can I put this? Some things were never meant to be made. This is one of them. I am utterly speechless as to how much I dislike this movie, which is sad because I loved House of 1000 Corpses. Our villains return in the sequel and terrorize people. No point, really. They just terrorize...

Party party PARTY! That was the battle cry this weekend. Holy crap, I was wasted. Some friends of mine are moving to Illinois this week, and they had lots of stuff to get rid of. Among this stuff were 27 bottles of wine that they claimed had to be drunk in 24 hours. I did my part Friday night downing a whole bottle of 4-year...

Here's the long promised samurai poem. I wrote it Memorial Day weekend last year. Cool story to go with it: I was the only one in town that weekend, and deciding that the only good thing on TV was the Indy 500 I drove up to the Blue Ridge Parkway to finish this. While I was up there a couple of things happened. First, and...

As one of my friends has shared with me. It's like going to a job interview and having them say we're not going to give you the job. You're everything we're looking for and more, in fact, you meet every standard we have, and although you will probably do the job better than anyone else, instead, we're going to give the job to someone else less qualified even though he expects more compensation.

Do you have any idea how much I fucking hate Emo? The Ataris are in their mid to late 20's, some married with children, and they still sing about being a depressed, girl-obsessed teenager. One of the new girls at the coffee shop will be a high school junior next Fall and she says all her friends are Emo, and they sit around saying, "God,...

alright, so what the fuck is "emo" anyway?? is it being sad and lonely for no reason, and now there is a name for it?
poet22:
i'm sure there will be a lashback sometime in the next 3 years. the mid 90's were fairly happy until alanis. then they found the depressive market. september 11th had some more uplifting music but emo had already saturated the indie and college market and boomed to highschool and pop culture. emo will only rain supreme until we find something better than goth metal and boy band front men. but the truth is, the 90's gave birth to the "modern male" who isn't afraid of his emotional side. it also gave death to the 80's hair metal testosterone driven male because it's politcally incorrect or something. it's hard to fight that kind of cultural change. the Bad Ass image is a delicate thing these days.
I wrote this my senior year of college, on my twenty-first birthday. I'd been obsessing for the whole summer about Spider-man and the death of Gwen Stacy from the early 70's comic and how they'd changed it in the first movie. In the comic, Goblin drtops an unconscious Gwen from the George Washington Bridge, but when Spider-man's web hits her ankle and stops her fall,...

interesting prose-poem. i wonder how many people when you read it understood all the references (a couple definitely eluded me). I feel your superhero dreams in a lonely heart.
it's a good way to describe growing up. i definitely have been going through the emotions you described for the past couple years.
please define triumvirate?

I've decided your going to see some of my poetry soon. Last year I decided that the five things I'm passionate about are Marvel Comics, samurai, zombies, video games, and Lord of the Rings. What better sources from which to draw inspiration than the things we're passionate about? I'm trying to write five "philosophy" poems about each of these things, one for each, and I...

It feels so great when you roll consistently well, let alone have your best night of bowling ever. Our league team is middle of the pack and probably not going to win anything, but we went through a number of weeks where we had at least one vacant spot, which hurt us. The last three weeks we've all been there rolling, and we've pretty much...

So we just had the biggest storm in recent memory here in Roanoke and the power's gone out about ten times, but I'm still stupid enough to try and update my page. Seriously, I looked out my front window and everything was blurred with rain. I went into my bedroom and looked out the window and I thought the building was about to blow away....

Tell me about the storms. Ugh. It kicked three of our radio stations off the air (that we know of at this point) and has been a pain in the ass all night. It also took down my Internet connection this afternoon. Zombie movies are works amongst themselves. Shaun of the Dead is the only one I've ever gotten into. Maybe I'll see Dawn of the Dead though, I've heard good word of mouth stuff about it. -Dave

So this rain you speak of. I was driving from New Jersey back here in the Burg and 81 was a nightmare of rain. I couldn't see 20 feet in front of me. That's bad at 60mph.
Power out party sounds like fun. Laptops have batteries. But laptops without internet just feel impotent. ummm...so to speak? nevermind. haha
