Belated info on a trip I took to Tallinn, Estonia back in January. I was passing through Helsinki and looking for an interesting side trip and Tallinn made the top of the list. Easy 2.5 hour ferry ride with multiple options every day. Clearly this is is a party trip for Finn's looking for a cheap alternative to Helsinki prices. Being that it was January and snowing, there was a lot less of the party atmosphere in the town which was fine with me since I went to take in the sights. The old city is lovey and great to walk even if made treacherous by the ice and snow. Lots of the old city wall is intact and the views from within the city area are phenomenal.
The city square is great, you really don't have to wander far off the square before you find more reasonable restaurants and bars. Some of the places around the square were a bit overly touristy for me rather than just having good food and drinks.
There is a great navy/air museum called the Seaplane Harbor. It is worth a visit to see the awesome free standing multi-dome concrete structure alone but I spent a good 1/2 day there wandering through the collection.
On a more sobering note there is a museum of the occupations which documents the cruelty that has been part of the Estonian history for most of the 20th century.
All in all a great trip and I would encourage anyone to go if you get the chance.
