My limiting factor here is time and money. The bus we are planning on towing, but I'm supposed to drive my geo. I'm planning on pulling the crank, with the engine in the car. Tthe tolerances were good when I first put in the main bearings. also, would those bearings create a knock? When I drove her the second time, she drove fine aside from a shifting problem, but after I seated the piston rings and was on my way home, she started to knock only in 4th with a little bit of throttle, and I could feel it in the gas pedal. No throttle or full throttle she was fine. It gradually got worse to the point that she was knocking all the time. I finally got her home. I talked to some people that suggested it could be bearings, not bent valves as my boyfriend had thought. The next morning I started her up. I could not audibly hear a knock, but I listened through a screwdriver at differents points on the valve cover, I could here some noise, nothing that seemed too detrimental. I listened at the oil pan, around 1/2 cylinders was about the same, but it was really loud around the 3/4 cylinder, so I shut her off and removed the oil pan and took off the main caps. The shifting problem I mentioned, she idles just under 1000pm, but if I try to go in 1st she drops to around 500 and wants to die, even at full throttle. Once I get up to about 20mph or so, I can shift into 2nd and she drives. If I shift into 3rd, she revs up like I downshifted. I do have an idiot light to tell me when to shift up (like I need it ) and it wanted me to shift into 4th doing 25. It seems to me like 1st and 3rd got swapped, but if I try to start to go in 3rd its worse. I was told by one of my old auto teachers that the thrust bearing looked like it was caused by riding the clutch. I think it was by trying to move!
As far as the bus, we got new cap, rotor, points, condensor, can't remember on plugs/wires, since it's been a year. The new points broke while we were driving her, so we put the old one back on. Trev synced the carbs, he was going to adjust valves tonight when he got home. But I'll let him know about checking plugs and stuff first....
When I had everything torn apart and out of the car, I did pressure wash the block and blow dry her with the compressor. I don't have a cherry picker or anything to just lift the engine out, last time the head was off and I dropped the engine/tranny to floor and slid it out, I don't have time to do it again. And did you mean checking the crank journals? the oil pump is brand new, and by screen the oil sump? I can' t think of any other screen....Yeah, I know it could be much worse, that's what I am thankful for! And with the block in the car and everything attached but the oil pan, what would be the best way to clean oil passages? I should have taken the block to get cleaned while it was apart, but I didn't think about it....
