RJD2/Prefuse 73 tour 5-16-03 S.F. Great American Music Hall
A Grape Dope opened the show. I missed them cos I was outside dealing with getting smurfed and a will call line that was long and arduous. If any of you know about A Grape Dope and what they sound like please fill me in as I am very curious. My homeboy got a free ticket to get in which was cool because by the time we got to the ticket counter the show sold out. So Jah bless the kid that laced us. RJD2 was the highlight of the show. He spun many many records using 4 turntables yes I said 4. I think he is very talented and it showed as he coordinated such a broad sonic attack on our collective ears. He played everything from his trademark soul breaks to his fantastic hip-hop productions featuring Mghz and Blueprint. The whole crowd went crazy at one point when he dropped in Head Over Heels - Tears for Fears. and then layered it with some huge head knodding beats, that seemed to me to be the highlight of his set, although the whole arraingment was something to behold. He is one of the best DJ in the underground scene right now as far as quick mixing and blending goes. His productions are out of sight and his reputation for being one of the DJs to watch in the new millenium is well deserved. J-Roc(beat junkies) is one of the only dj's off the top of my head who does a better quick mix in this genre. RJ also had a little trivia contest after the set in which he played some original breaks from the late 60's early 70's and let the crowd guess who remixed and looped the jams into hiphop records. Run DMC, Tribe, and De la Soul were among the artists in the trivia. All in all great set and great performer. I did miss seeing the MCees that travel occasionally travel with him. Having MCees at a DJ show definately helps to create a bit more of an intimate environment and it help to get the crowd even more involved. Especially if it's not a dance crowd. So next time RJ bring Blueprint!!!!
Fast foward to Prefuse 73. An extremely talented and forward thinking producer with a great idea for a live show. Unfortunately after about 30 minutes I got a little irritated and bored so I bounced. He got up on stage with a Ti-book, a MPC 2000xl, Moog Voyager, Novation K station, a drum kit, and turntables(he had a guest dj performing along side of him for backup-don't know who it was) You would think that with all of these great instruments and obvious know how that this would be a truely fantastic performance. Well at first it was. Halfway through the second track a live drummer came out and jammed on top of the sequenced beats and it was very very heavy. Then for some reason the set just lost it's steam and momentum. Scott started jamming out on his Moog and his K-station a bit too much and the heavy beats got sort of left in the background. The tone of the synths were sort of peircing and annoying and finally I got sick of the whole shit and left. I could have been that the sound in room wasn't tweaked right for his setup but whatever it was, his tracks ended up going limp and I simply couldn't handle seeing one of my favorite artists put on a mediocre show. I do not like associating his records with that type of performance so I grabbed my coat and split.
Apon leaving I ran into these cats selling cds out front and one of them turned out to be an MCee named Orco from San Diego. I had stumbled apon one of his 12" inchs called Love Triangle about 5-6 years ago and always liked that record, so I was stoked to meet him and we talked for a minute. At first he was telling me about his new record and he made a reference to Nephlim which is the term for angels in the book of Genesis but also translates to giants and in Summerian text it is a term used to describe the Annunaki or "aliens" from Niburu. I asked him if he was studying Summerian text and sure enough he was into it.
I told him about my project and also chatted with his friend who's name is long and escapes me at the moment. He's a sick mcee as well and appearently they did a show at SFSU the night before which I missed
Orco gave me his number before I bounced and who knows maybe a track will emerge from the meeting. I caught a cab and rolled over to Dave's, a bar next to my crib, and had a Stella before heading up stairs and off to dreamland. The night was a good one. No drama or violence and mostly good music, who could complain. RJD2 is well worth the ticket if he shows up in your area. Support your underground starving artists!!!!!!
