Last weekend I visited Auschwitz in Poland on a day trip from the beautiful city of Krakow. To say that it moved me would be an understatement.
Above the gates are the words "Arbeit macht frei" which means "Work sets you free" an introduction to the mental cruelty applied by the nazis throughout.
The monstrous crimes that were committed are too numerous to go into detail here but I will say that the piles of children's shoes left over from the gas chambers (found by the Russian army that liberated the camp) reduced me to tears.
Everyone should visit this place, especially given the times we live in.
