i can't afford to wait and get better higher-end glass, i need something right now, for the 2 weddings coming up. i am thinking i'm going to go with the 24-120 VR, it seems like a decent zoom. i understand primes are ideal, but they're not realistic for weddings (as you mentioned). and off-brand glass is getting a lot better these days. obviously not comparable to nikon glass, but it's a less expensive substitute to get me where i need to be for the time being. i am not making thousands of dollars here, i'm looking to take some pics that are going to help me build my portfolio so i can eventually make that much! and to the untrained eye, sigma/tamron/tokina images are going to be just as good as those taken with nikkor glass. it's what's behind the camera that's important, hehe.
the best thing about photography equipment is it doesn't depreciate in value too horribly. so what i get now, i can re-sell in a year or two when i have the money to buy better stuff. i love ebay
