Double feature Saturday!! It's been *months* since I saw a movie in the theater, so today we went out and saw two!
First, we saw The Simpsons Movie and then Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix...
I loved The Simpsons Movie... it was pretty damn funny. But, it was pretty much just an hour-and-a-half long episode of The Simpsons. A well-written, full of great gags episode of The Simpsons, but really, just like an episode.
Next up was Harry Potter. I was a little disappointed. Now, I have not read any of the books, so I'm not basing any disappointment on differences between the books or anything like that. But I just didn't like the direction in this movie. I've seen them all so far, and the first two were definitely not as dark and more "kid friendly". They have Chris Columbus written all over them. The Goblet of Fire wasn't bad... but really, the Prisoner of Azkaban was the best one to date. It struck the right balance of adventure and darkness--and I think it's all in the direction.
The Order of the Phoenix was dark.... but I didn't like the overall look, like the film stock and the way it was shot. The acting seemed a little flat at times, too. And why did they do stuff like change the way the Dementors looked? In Azkaban, they looked really terrifying... now they look like ghosts wrapped in a burlap sack. Not nearly as scary. I dunno... I suppose there was a lot of setup for the future (supposedly--Mrs. Groove reads the books) but I just didn't like it as much as the others, and considering I hate schockmeister's like Columbus, that says a lot.
Still, it was a fun day at the movies. Now we're going to play video games in bed. And probably do some other stuff, too.
