I've talked to a few friends in the library system and they all feel that my manager is an alarmist. Most of the budget shortfall will come out of the materials budget, in otherwords we aren't going to buy many new books next year. There are also about 40 professional librarians of lower rank than myself who will be laid off ahead of me. So the odds are better than I thought. On the other hand I shouldn't be complacent. I am looking at other jobs especially since the public and academic hiring processes are so slow. I can always turn some thing down if my current situation remains stable. In a worse case senerio we have a good suport network here in San Diego. My mood is no longer one of panic but vigilance. Thanks for all the good thoughts and words everyone.
