For eight years now, every other year or so in the Spring, my back and left arm decide it would be fun to tie my muscles up in knots. It's not so much fun, but it's hardly as bad as people with actual bone or back problems have it. I can actually make it better for a while by pounding myself with a baseball bat- hard enough, but not too hard.
But anyway. Some indication that one has developed a tolerance for "hot stuff" would be: you get capsaicin-based heating cream in your eyes, and it's barely even a nuisance.
This is why I have to use stuff that has a rather sternly worded warning label for my chili.

Have you considered getting a massage for this? I've never had one, but I keep telling myself I should try it.
