Towards Autumn
There's a deal with the devil coming due now any day
And he who struck the bargain may not be he who has to pay
So listen for the steps behind but keep your eyes ahead-
For to know too much- or little- is to count among the dead.
Now, if you whistle past the graveyard, and keep your dread in hand
You just may dodge the shadows that fall fast upon the land-
Yet early in the evening, when sunlight slants and fails
In your heart you'll know the dark holds more than fear and tales.
