Resolutions.
Wow. Anyone know why we as a culture even fucking do this? Every year, people sit back and make a "To Do List" for themselves, and then by February they are already into self-flagellation mode over failing to keep a promise they made to themselves.
I'll have to look that up. The history of this whole resolution business that is.
Anyway, on to my own.
1. QUIT SMOKING
Already did this one thank you very much. Haven't bought a pack of smokes since the week before Thanksgiving. Yay me. My buddy Stuntbutt will find that hardest to believe I'm sure, but yeah, its true. Sure, I fell off the wagon a couple of times in early December, borrowing a smoke or two from still addicted friends in moments of weakness. But, truth be known I haven't had a smoke in over a month.
I'm chewing nicotine gum like its my fucking job though.
2. BLOG MORE
That's right. I resolve to do what I am doing right this very second more in 2011. Not because you need to read it, but because I need to get this shit written down. No more excuses. I've even taken to writing blogs on the train in to work...which is how I'm writing this very blog right now. Can't use that "no time" excuse anymore. Two to three entries a week is where I will start. We'll see where it goes from there.
3. DRAW MORE
Seriously. I've been working in web design for so long that putting pen or pencil to paper seems almost alien. I need to draw more also because it takes me to my zen place, and these days I could use a bit more zen. (Didn't you see that I quit smoking? You don't want me to stab somebody in the head with a fork do you?)
4. BRING BACK THE LOST ART OF LETTER WRITING
Recently, while doing research and remembering about when I was a kid and my family lived in Germany, another memory sprang forth...my Grandmother wrote letters to my mom twice a week. No one could read my grandmothers handwriting as well as my mother, so my mother would read them aloud to us. These letters weren't historical tomes of non-fiction, they were simply these wonderfully warming bits of life back home in the States, and I didn't realize how much I enjoyed them until I relived the memory. I need to start writing letters...mostly to my mom and Grandfather, but letters nonetheless. Not emails, but real, stick them in an envelope and find a stamp letters. I will not of course be doing them long-hand. No one can read MY handwriting.
5. GET IN SHAPE
Yeah, I know, everyone says this one. But, I promised my girlfriend we would participate in the Broad Street Run this year...and she's holding me to it. There's no way my big ass is getting down Broad St without losing weight. Unless someone rolls me.
And as for the history of New Year's Resolutions? I just came upon this little tidbit. Might be truth, might be myth, but it has a nice ring to it.

"The tradition of the New Year's Resolutions goes all the way back to 153 B.C. Janus, a mythical king of early Rome was placed at the head of the calendar.
With two faces, Janus could look back on past events and forward to the future. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions and many Romans looked for forgiveness from their enemies and also exchanged gifts before the beginning of each year."
