So, by request I'm outlining the benefits to me joining ROTC and the Army Reserve through the SMP program.
Here's how it works. I'll be a part of the Army Reserve unit in Opelika (the town literally humping Auburn) for the next two years while I'm in school, as a Cadet getting E5 pay (which is good, I forget how much I'm getting per month for 16 hours of work per month). During this time I will be completely non-deployable. I may also be geting an ROTC scholarship, and a stipend (that has yet to be worked out). Then after I graduate, I'll recieve my Active Duty commission as a 2nd Lieutenant.
This summer I'll be going to basic training for 9 weeks, where I will be recieving active duty pay.
Basically I'll be a part of the Army Reserve, working one weekend a month and two weeks over the summer and getting paid, while I'm in school and being trained to become an Army officer (which I may also be getting paid for), and then I'll have all the benefits of being in the Army, like free healthcare, and cool guns. Especially the cool guns
.
Oh did I mention that while I'm in school I'm nondeployable? After I get my commission though, the United States government has my soul for 8 years
. But hey, I'm ok with that, especially since they'll be giving me moneys!!!
There was some other stuff too that I've forgotten (like how much money it is that they're actually giving me), and I don't have all the paperwork right here with me. But yeah, it's good stuff.
I'm sad though, I'll have to shave n stuff
. I'll miss my red beard
.
Argh! I be redbeard the pirate! Drop your pants and prepare to be boarded!!!

I was just talking about something along the lines of this with my friend at work. He still needs to meet up with some people and sign some contracts.
So you'll be an off cut then! haha at least thats what officer cadets get called here...
I almost joined reserves here but they don't own you, well depending on how you sign up!
Who knows you might become a career officer. Are promotions to 1st LT time based, what about Captain?
After that is it on merit?
Enjoy the guns, they're fun but I'm pretty much a hippy now
I used to shoot full bore competition though
