I Posted this in the Roots Group.........but a slight history of my love of reggae....
First Wave: 1975-My Uncle Gene stayed with us for a summer........He was working in the UK as a Recording Engineer snd had come back to the states with Boatloads of Reggae from the UK. I was entertained all summer as a 5 year old dancing to Bob Marley and the Wailers.while the adults smoked funny cigarettes........
2nd Wave: Being a tough NYC kid coming to Upstate NY (ithaca) and discovering I could get in to Reggae shows at the old Haunt underage and selling reefer to the old guys..........I saw Israel Vibration, Bunny Wailer, John Holt, The Techniques, Burning Spear, The Heptones, etc.
3rd Wave-Living in Boston, going to Bereklee and realizing I could do sound for the reggae guys and not get shot in Dorchester late at night for being white. I did sound for: Ninjaman, Tiger, Shaggy, Shinehead, Joe Higgs, Fully Fullwood, Agustus Pablo, Yellowman, etc.
4th Wave-Living in Seattle, One night doing sound for Joe Higgs and Hepcat (Rainbow Room on 45th) discovered that Fully Fullwood was playing bass for Joe and that he had played bass for Peter Tosh ended up having a dub session with Jumbalassy until the wee hours of the morning............
5th Wave- Doing a remastering Job for the Sufferer Heights Label in Jamaica, I get invited down to work in the Tuff Gong Studios, One of my life's great honors to work on transferring 7 inch singles to digital storage...Ran in to Steven, Israel Vibrations Merch Guy at a show. Knows Fully Fullwood, we go to his house and smoked like champions. Talked of Peter Tosh and The loony Lee Scratch Perry........I go to Jamaica Every Year to finish the project, 2 years to go.
6th Wave- Driving back from the airport in Denver I hear a band called The Slackers playing on NPR of all places and heard the essence of all of the old lovers, rocksteady, ska, rudeboy, etc that I had been mixing about a month before. It Turned nto alifelong frienship.
7th Wave-Reggae on the Rocks, this past summer. Rained like hell, I was layered in Gore-Tex dying to see the Easy Star All Stars do "Dub Side of the Moon" , I had peaked on my buddy's mushrooms, more rain, I ducked into a tent and lo and behold there was Steven
working Isreal Vibrations merch stand, I got a big hug and spent the afternoon matching my Summit County No 6 with his Norcal Blueberry......Then it went to the bus and then to the side of the stage for the Vibration set......Fully was on Bass and they did 2 Joe HIggs Tunes........Heaven......
That is the crib notes version.......I'll be back in Kingston in April.......

Sounds like a wonderful life so far. I'll have to check out the Slackers, that's like the 4th time I've heard random goodness about them. The good Marley always mellows me out. Ahhh.
