there is nothing better than taking a good dog on a camping trip.
Crazies of crazies, man. My buddies that met me in Arkansas (Devil's Den) left a little after I did. They were driving from Kansas City and I was driving from Dallas. and crazy enough we both exit the freeway onto the road to the state park at the same time and get on the road without a single car between us.
That was friday night, we just got all our gear ready just after dark and hiked in about 45 minutes and set up camp. My friend Jonathan then made a fantastic dinner on two whisperlite stoves. Jonathan is a great cook and we all are experienced campers. That whole weekend I ate better than I do at home. The next morning was fresh eggs, with shallots, peppers and hash browns. sooo freakin' good. then we broke camp and hiked about 7 miles. I tell ya, Arkansas was alot prettier than I thought it would be. And the terrain was even challenging. Of course with 70 pounds on your back anything is challenging but it was up and down alot. Thankfully we stopped after one horrendous climb, I was moving pretty slow by then, and made camp for saturday night.
This time we found it before dark and found ourselves in a small clearing on a cliff that overlooked some other hills and a beautiful sunset view. Dinner was a hearty lentil soup, followed by chicken with green peppers and I don't know what all, and ramen noodles without all the extra water. We were carrying all of our water so we hard to conserve. That was followed by a great campfire, cigars, a large bottle of rum, and two small bottles of scotch. well, there were four of us and darn it if we didn't get our fill and still have some left over. yup, last saturday night was a really good night. The next morning, another smaller campfire while we had pancakes and hash browns for breakfast. We hiked to a nice overlook for lunch and then another couple of hours back to the cars. I was so glad to sit down the 4 hour drive back to dallas was the quickest in memory. And that night's sleep was more comfortable than I remember my bed being.
Then I woke up early went to work and then came home and went to the social distortion show on monday. I want to do nothing this weekend. Nothing at all. Who is with me?
