Since you don't seem adverse to reading comics, and you have rats, you should check out a book called "The Tale of One Bad Rat" by Bryan Talbot. It's about a girl who runs away from home, with only her pet rat to keep her company. I know people say this about a lot of things, but it's very touching, and you'll be a better person if you read it. I gave a copy to my teacher-friend and she absolutely loved it.
