stranded daily in a hungry world,
we salute your tenacious love of finger
and thumb, oh crumb
of mottled clinger and the way
you slip the hooked predation
of small children from within
those snotty grottoes.

Nimbly jump, oh crusty warrior
from one glad handshake
to another; stalk housekeepers
from beneath formica, behind naugahyde
and lurk around the curve of knob.
Linger on lapel and sheet proud gob and trail
your nailed crimsons like
a flag proclaiming you to be
the single honest signature
of our humanity.
