Remembering ENTERPRISE
Picked up a copy of Star Trek: Enterprise - Season One on DVD. Most of these episodes I only saw once when they first aired. Having a chance to watch them all back to back in order, knowing whats to come in the series, all I can say is what a great show. The cast was fantastic and though not every episode is a gem, it really does start to show how the saga would take shape. There is a deleted scene from the episode Shuttlepod One that is truly touching to the character of Archer.
I bring all of this up because I think I am more pissed about the slap in the face this show and its cast got on the final episode of the series. For those of you who dont know about it, I wont get into it. You probably wouldnt understand it, anyway. The concept for the episode was not a bad one, but it should NOT have been the last one. There were actually 4 major points in the episode and each one should have been an episode in and of itself. Even worse, the episode was ONE hour long, not two as the previous 3 STAR TREK series had. It was as if they just really didnt care, which is a shame.
More amazing was that its fourth and final season was the strongest the series had had. To this day no one can really explain why it was cancelled when it was. But history seems to be repeating itself. The show has gained a 15% increase in viewership in re-runs, not unlike the Original Series did. Not bad for a show thats been out of production for less than a year. Sadly, the final episode of the series marked the end of the voyage. Unless, of course, they want to bring it back and give us the 6 years we were cheated (fans will know what I mean by that.).
All I can say is, if you werent that fond of the show to begin with, give it an honest second chance. If you were a fan, get the 4 seasons on DVD and remember how good it was. And lets all hope whatever new STAR TREK project comes along down the line, Manny Coto is put in charge of it.
