The simply fact is...unless there is a reef, you should never ever ever[//i] see a 10 foot wave far out to sea. The deeper the water, the smaller the waves. Now granted that isn't necessarily intuitive, but anyone that spends any time at all by the ocean would recognize this is not normal.
