I work as a theatre technician for a road house--people rent the space, but don't stay very long. Usually it's not very rewarding work. I get companies who demand a lot in a short time, knowing full well that I can't accomodate them. Companies that rent the theatre end up being amatuerish simply because no proper theatre company would pay that much to rent a place you can't make any changes to. You have no time to change the lighting plot, and even if you did, you're not allowed to, or have to put it back exactly where it was when you're finished (see time issue above). Not to mention the fact that the theatre was designed by two professors in the 1970s so it looks like an awful cross between the festival stage at Stratford and a log cabin.
Basically, we get student companies, and a lot of lectures.
But once a month, on Mondays, I get to run the best event ever. Film Buff Mondays. I get paid to watch old and rare films from people's private collections. Last month I watched THE MODEL AND THE MARRIAGE BROKER, and this month I get to watch ACE IN THE HOLE--a Billy Wilder film starring Kirk Douglas.
I can't wait for tonight.
