Following Friday nights disappointing defeat against Cardiff the Sheffield Steelers looked to bounce back against a Belfast Giants side that with a shootout win over Dundee the previous night had leapfrogged the Steelers into 2nd place in the league table. The newly named "king of Sheffield" Mathieu Roy would open the scoring for the Steelers at 12:00 and Levi Nelson would double the lead at just over the halfway point of the game and Jesse Schultz would make it 3-0 on a 5 on 3 powerplay however the biggest talking point came near the end of the 2nd period as David Rutherford delivered a nasty hit to the head of Yared Hagos. Guillaume Desbiens looked to square off with Rutherford however Giants Jim Vandemeer would also get involved causing all 3 men to fall to the ice with Rutherford at the bottom of the pile resulting on him being stretchered off and taken to the local hospital. In the 3rd period Schultz would get his 2nd goal of the game and with 3 minutes to go Ben O'Connor would make it 5-0 however the moose was denied the shut out he desperately deserves as former Steeler Colin Shields would get a consolation goal for the Giants to end the game Sheffield Steelers 5 Belfast Giants 1
My man of the match - Ervins Mustukovs - What has this guy got to do to get a shut out this season
David Rutherford update - David was given the all clear at the hospital. EIHL DOPS (Department Of Player Safety) are automatically investigating the match penalty he received for checking to the head and results from that investigation should be made public later today - Update Rutherford has been suspended for 2 games. Personally it should have been at least 5 games
