So the other night at the Universal Amphitheater I witnessed Al Franken demolish Ann Coulter in a debate. It wasn't much of a debate - Franken spoke first - he was witty, and articulate. Everything you could want from a democrat. Now I should tell you I am way more inclined to support anyone that is against the current regime - for sake of full disclosure.
After Franken's funny, thoughtful speech Coulter came out and shit the bed. Her comments were not funny and she was really caught up in personal attacks from democrats - though she introduced this herself - saying that they call her a stupid whore. I actually felt bad for her. Her "prepared" remarks seemed like on-the-spot rambling and she addressed the Hollywood crowd as though she were going to be addressing her home team. The boo birds came out to get her a bunch.
Things went from bad to worse for her when she and Franken sat down for a more conversational debate. Franken scored more points and got more laughs - but thoughtful and not cheap ones. She had bites that sounded like talking points that were often very off topic.
Towards the end Cindy Sheehan passed in front of me several times - at which point I joined Coulter in sounding dumb when I whispered to her "Keep up the good work". She smiled and said thanks - so she obviously understood my meaning but I still felt like that was maybe the wrong thing to say to the mother of a son that was KIA.
Anyway - that was that. There were a few stretches of real boredom but all in all a good time. Franken is going to run for the senate from Minnesota in 2008 - I hope he makes it.
