christ i'm a posting bastard today. anyway....
i have this idea, and finally came up with what to call it, but bare with me while i tell you the whole thing.
one of the lines of thought i was running today, and several times recently was about labels. as in the labels we apply to ourselves based on whatever sub-/counter cultures we belong to. now i don't know about you guys out there in other places, but it seems to me that as i've aged, i've become increasing label unfreindly, as i've changed and (hopefully) matured a bit. some things remain important to me, but others have become less so. hardcore music and that scene for example. now i love hardcore, and most of what comes with it, and it gave me my first real taste of belonging to something larger than myself and a lot of people i still consider freinds. but i'm no longer very comfortable with labeling myself hardcore. there's far too much elitism and johnny like scensterism (i doubt that's a word, but you know what i mean, right?) associated with hardcore. plus, i've learned to not only appreciated other forms of music (especially industrial, which is very much like hardcore to me) but to be tolerant of music of which i am not a fan (see, told you i'd matured a bit). so that label doesn't even really apply all that well.
plus, we're human fucking beings, not lab specimens. what the fuck good is label anyway? to me it seems as if it all boils down to a case of i'm cooler than you highschool nonsense and it's slightly embarrasing to me that i've come to this conclusion at the age of 24 rather than 6. hopefully i'm not alone in this, so here's my idea....
stop using any label, except one. from now on i'm my own little culture and tribe, with open diplomatic relations to all other little culture tribes, provided they only have a membership of one. basically, i'm just going to take people as they are, rather than assume because we have different interests, we won't get along. so everybody's cool, everybody is welcome, from laid back hippy-ish types to uptight artsy types, but only so long as you're cool with everybody.
::pats self on the back::
damn i'm retarded to have taken so long to figure this out...
