Thren swung the blade of his sword wildly, knocking away the jabbing spear as it was thrust at him. He treated several steps his heavy armour clanking as he did so. He swung again, a bit more prepared this time as he was forced further and further up the winding staircase. The men-at-arms were swarming over the grounds like ants. They hacked and jabbed at Threns own soldiers, many of whom had fallen under the dawn rush of men over the wall. It had been a miracle that Thren had managed to get his armour on in time and meet this group as they stormed the staircase.
Where their superior numbers would have been advantageous in the open space of the courtyard, the narrow confines of the staircase meant Thren had the advantage. They could only assail him one or two at time and even then the length of their spears made full use of them almost impossible.
