Five-Minute fiction - 23:23-23:28
The ceiling of dirt gave way piece by piece. It came away in clumps and pebbles as he scrabbled at them with numb, bleeding fingers. He had been clawing at the dirt for what seemed like hours, but time was different in the earth, in the dark. He could feel his heart beat in his chest, bumping mercilessly against his ribs. The sound would be all the sweeter when heard in the air above.
Strange sights assailed his eyes, washing across his visions on phantom lights only to fade at the briefest of attention. Phantoms, ghosts, the tricks of the senses played on the mind as the body gave in to hunger, thirst, and exhaustion. He clawed hard, tearing frantically at the cold, freezing dirt.
He screamed. Screamed as never he had before in his life as the beam of light lanced down from on high
