Happy birthday to me. I have officially entered my late twenties.
Things are actually looking up, yo.
1. On Friday morning, I found out that I was accepted to the GPPI. So at least now I have one back-up plan for when I'm unemployed at the end of the summer. I'm under consideration for a scholarship, which means I have to write another essay on...

Since 99% of the folks who actually look at this journal come here from the Philosophy group, I thought I'd mention this here.
I'm going to be trying to keep a blog (more for myself than anyone else, but input is welcome) of 'rough draft' ideas in philosophy proper (so yeah, you'll probably hear about sovereignty again).
No idea how often it'll be updated, since...

re: my weird ass program. i'm in the ph.d program right now. but in addition to courses and exams - we have a thesis requirement. SO, in our 2nd year we do a thesis. THEN, post-exam (which we should finish up ideally in the 3rd year) - we start the proposal/dissertation phase. basically, they just like to keep us busy. the thesis does have value .. you get a chance to work on developing an original project and work close with faculty. if you're good - you can plant the germ of a dissertation. it's an odd process.

Hope your doing well these days.
By the way, some tix are avilable for the show at Studio I'm working on, if you are interested.

I'm done, and I'm tired. So I'm going to replace my whining with a good old-fashioned meme:
Ten quotes from fave (not necessarily my top-ten fave, just ten that come to mind) movies of mine (the person I snagged it from on LJ did fifteen, but I'm lazy), see which ones you know (as always, Google is cheating):
1. "... I hasten to add that...

ya know, i've heard this about dissertations: they get done when you're tired of looking at it. i dunno if that's exactly good news, but hopefully it is *encouraging* at least?

Gaddang, am I ever sorry I led with the estate tax in my news post. But I don't think my insisting on the forest rather than the trees will do any additional good in that conversation.
Now, back to the challenge - can I completely rewrite the core chapter of my dissertation without getting too far behind my original draft date (1/8)? Current target: 1/11....

so i had to look up this news post - b/c i missed it the first time. wow. you set off a lil mini shit storm
it seemed like a lot of folks missed what you were getting at. what *i* understood it as saying was that your critique was not really about *justice* (which sort of comes from outside the market/rights paradim we have set up right now). instead, you looked at social stability and national character (the idea that we should be able to advance ourselves as part of the american creed), and how gross inequality endangers that. it was more *immanment* than that. (i thought it was a good point anyway.) - folks kinda turned it into some lame communist vs. libertarian crap debate. so it goes...

I just joined the SGDC so I thought I would say Hi.

So, I just registered to take the GREs. Again. I don't feel overwhelmingly good about this. Folks, don't let yer kids grow up to be philosophy grad students!
And, yeah, it's a Friday night. I swear, I was going to go to a party, but M gave me a nasty cold.

what kind of a program are you thinking of applying too?
signalnoise:
oh man - watch out for those security studies folk. they think weird - they're all about defense/offense. they're freaky. i'm surrounded by them here. i try to avoid them and just hang out with the theorists.

Well, the old picture was pushing 2 years old. So even though this one isn't so philosophical-looking, it's not that bad, and I figured it was high time for an update.
Though, I feel like updating here carries with it the whole weary burden of having to respond to stuff in groups, too. Maintaining an internet social life is hard! Especially when I'm having enough...

i once went to a bachelor party where we hardly drank and playned nintendo. so ya know, d&d would be like an upgrade from that.

abra:
great new profile pic. it does have a philosophical sense to it (everything is philosophical), plus a great punk/political thing.
i love the image of a bachelor party of drinking and d&d. that's so geeky. what would you be drinking? (i don't know what d&d players drink.)
a tweed jacket! that's perfect. with elbow patches, i hope.
my high point: being told that a letter i sent someone made his millenium.

Well, I feel a vague need to explain myself, but my absence has probably made most of my friends here fade away anyway.
The major reason I haven't been updating much either here or on my LJ is that I've had my head down with the job search. Ick. JFP (Jobs For Philosophers) came out Monday, which means that I've spent most of this week...

How are classes going? Hope your holiday went swimmingly.
By the way, I've probably got the hook up for the shows at the theatre this week, if you're interested.

Oh man, me and that joke have a long history. Last year, I was on of the directors in a night of one-acts, and one of the shows in the prodcution was a dramtization of that joke.
It was 30 minutes long. I'm not kidding.

ugh. sorry the job search is so frustrating. i was just thinking about you yesterday (in a TOTALLLY non-creepy way, i swear), and i was wondering: i know i don't know MUCH about your dissertation, but it sounds like sort of a normative/critical piece. i know a lot of american philosophy departments are analytic - so i was wondering how that impacted your job search? honestly - my inexpert opinion thought: "gods, galvagin would be more at home in a *political science* department in some ways..." [though i'm sure there are lots of things about poli sci depts. that would bug the hell out of you too]
i often look at sorta-envy at my friends (and even my wife) who have 'normal' jobs or who left school after a 'regular' amount of time. but god, i don't know how i would ever hold down a 9-to-5 gig. i could do it. but i think i might wilt....

I suppose I should slog on over to the CE board and announce this... grr.

Getting you that remote is one of my great life goals. Seriously. I WILL repay that karmic debt. When is the next Cake Love event? I'll drop by after work.
2. Double congratualtions!
3. Er, um, hey look! "Abortifacient." I learned a new word!
4. You should have SEEN the stuffed chicken breast I made for mine last night.
And oh, yeah, happy birthday!
