Again, thanks to dmac for asking the questions that led to this blog.

Here we go...

1. Does the fact that you've never done something before increase or decrease its appeal to you?

That depends. If we're talking about a recreational activity that is bound to be fun and exhilarating, then the appeal is increased. I had never been white water rafting until a few years ago. I always wanted to go, and when I finally did, it was a rush. I was very much looking forward to it because I knew (without knowing[/]) that I'd love the experience. That's an obvious instance where the appeal was increased...

The idea of skydiving, however, scares the bejesus out of me. Having never done doesn't increase it's appeal one bit. I don't know that it really decreases the appeal, though...

I've never done jail time. Guess which category that one falls under...

2. How do you react when people sing "Happy Birthday" to you in a restaurant?

First, I cringe and shrink away under the table. Then I seek out the sneaky rat bastard that told them to do it. I like to exist quietly in this world, and when a lot of attention is heaped onto me, I don't know quite what to do with myself or the situation. It makes me uncomfortable. It's all made worse if funny hats or rhythmic clapping is involved. I'm not a fan of the birthday fanfare.

3. If you could choose the manner of your death, how would you exit this life?

Fucking...

That probably isn't exactly the direction this questions was supposed to take. Unfortunately, I already know how I go. I've seen it in a dream a thousand times. Sadly, it doesn't involve fucking... not even in the least little bit.

I'd much rather go out of natural causes...quietly and peacefully in my sleep. I'll save the heroics for reality. To fall asleep and go in an eternal dream has a lovely appeal to me.

So... there you have it. My boring answers to some pretty good questions.

In other news... I picked up the new Metallica CD, "Death Magnetic" this past weekend. I'll say this:

I've always supported the right and desire an artist has to explore and expand their horizons in any way they see fit. I defended Metallica through the Load/Reload years. I actually found songs on both of those albums that I quite liked... but neither album was really Metallica to me. Deep down inside, I held onto some faith that the boys would return someday with some thrashy riffs that would blow my head clean off my shoulders.

Death Magnetic is nowhere near the standard of perfection that they set with Master of Puppets... but, by God... it's head and shoulders above anything they've put out in the past 15 years. It's an effort to give the fans what they've been calling for.

If this is their last album (as some rumors have suggested), at least they didn't continue on the downward spiral from St. Anger... if this is just a sign of the direction they are headed... perhaps the follow-up will stay good and crunchy in milk like all of the albums we love from the Cliff Burton days.

I give it a thumbs up. Pick it up without expectations and enjoy.

One thumb only. It's a valiant effort to go back to what made them great but the infection is way too big, you can still hear Load and Reload and even St. Anger in their music. It's true that when you put black and white together and you get grey, you can never break them apart again.

The cartoonist is called Trino Camacho. He's local, and mostly apolitical, so his work is probably not very well known outside of Mexico.
