That common phrase is always a little bit awkward to hear/read for me, in social gatherings or anywhere online. Not Safe For Work. NSFW.
I’m not saying that ALL people should accept the personal choices of EVERYONE; you have the right to not want to see or hear about certain things. The problem is exactly that, is commonly accepted that nudity and sex belong to only certain areas and under certain regulations, and if you break that little space, you’re ostracised, sanctioned. Censored.
I get it, not many people want to see semen in the face of a person while they’re eating noodle soup and browsing Facebook, on their office. I’m there with you. But a nipple?, a random pic of a furry ass?, a cleave?, seriously?, you find a female nipple not safe to see in your workplace? you are uncomfortable watching two man kissing, in a picture? really?
We are still so immature that we can’t be bother to learn how to control our newsfeeds?, how to mentally filter content?
I often feel like I’ve to apologize when people ask me in what I’m working right now. It’s hard enough to see people think that working in videogames, art or videography is easy and not really hard work, but when you throw there “NSFW" people hardly take you seriously, at any level, and I think that says a lot about our society and the stage of the world. We still live in a very prude and judgemental world.
I’m blessed in a way, because my coworkers and close friends are nothing like the vast majority of the people on earth, but that’s another issue altogether; having to choose so carefully the people of your life, is tiresome, and have to draw a line so thick between “your kind people” and the rest of the world make you feel out of place in the society you live in. I want to be a member of my community, and I want to make art with explicit sexual content. I don’t want to HAVE to separate and compartmentalize my life for the commodity of some outdated morals.
We have come a LOOOONG way, but the road ahead, to real open mindness and inclusion, is still long.
