GABBA GABBA HEY!
must i defend my "punkness" to a 16 yr old because i dont have a sleave of tats & a mohawk? i had liberty spikes when that fucker was in diapers. yet, i get quized on where the Supersuckers are from? i realize i dont look my age, but, when i was in high school it was about solidarity amongst the punk crowd... not "how punk do you look?" now adays the jocks that made fun of our "combat boots" have sleaves and faux-hawks. WTF?
it has become clear to me that punk rock is a main stream fashion statement now... not a movement of people fighting for the injustices & hypocrisy of the world, joined together by a common belief that we can make a difference & a love for music. we all liked different forms of music. i liked the Misfits and Minor Threat & my best friend liked Depeche Mode and The Cure... neither one of us questioned the "punkness" of the other (although, c'mon.. depeche mode? jk) because we didnt care what people thought of us... it was what was on the inside not our exterior.
i want to get a tattoo - something that means something to me personally. i have the design. but... should i get it? this confrontation with the retail clerk has pushed me to the point of thinking i might not get one. is that a cop-out? should i just say FUCK YOU and get one? the reason i dont have any is simple; i've never created a piece of art that i felt should be on my body for the rest of my life & i didnt want to put anybody elses artwork on my body... now i have that creation, but am i just a sheep following the herd if i get one?
NEW QUOTE FOR THE DAY:
"Well I don't care 'bout the clothes you wear
It's the size of your heart, not the length of your hair.
Don't make no difference to me, the color that you be
black, red, white or brown, it's all the same to me"

My original tattoo I wanted was a hand-drawn inking I made of a rose garland, with a barb wire wrapped around it. I let the tattoo shop dudes talk me out of getting exactly what I wanted because they wanted too much $ for it. So, while I ended up with the same symbols tattooed on my body, I should have waited & paid the extra money & gotten what I really wanted.
All 3 of my tattoos have personal meaning to me. I did not get them to be "trendy". I do have to wonder how much of punk style is mainstream now. Speaking of retail clerks & tattoos- yesterday while I was in line at the grocery store, the bagger was talking to 2 girls ahead of me about tatts. He was describing a huge one he had that went from his thigh & up to his hip & stomach. Before that he asked the girls if they'd gotten any new tattoos. I thought it was kind of childish. Like, I've got a new tattoo- where's yours?!
I would say that no one should get a tattoo on a whim, just to fit in, or on a dare. I considered all of mine (with the exception of the Hello Kitty) for several years before actually having them done. That is why I say go ahead with yours because you can wear it with pride, knowing you didn't just settle for whatever flash you saw on the wall at some corner tattoo shop!!!
