Niko has been sooooo protective of me lately! She has always been somewhat protective, but over the last two weeks, she growls and barks at almost any man that comes near me. Mostly men. She knows I don't trust men I don't know, (i am skiddish because i have been attacked) I guess Niko can sense it. Yesterday when I was playing with my nephew in the floor, my roomie came in the door, and she stood by me and my nephew and growled at my roomie! I was surprised! Maybe it was because he was carrying his guitar in with him and she didn't like it. Or she could have been protecting the child. I don't know. And she has started guarding me outside the bathroom door when I take a shower. Do you think they know we are more vulnerable when we are naked? I mean, she isn't being overly aggressive or anything like that, I don't want to give that impression at all.... she isn't being vicious or anything, or trying to attack, or out of control in any way, etc... But definitely protective. This is new behavior.
To tell the truth I kinda like it. It makes me feel more secure when I am in the house all by myself during the week.

I wonder if it is natural for dogs to become more protective over their people as they get older?

I start my class at the Red Cross Wednesday. I guess I will find out if I get to go help Katrina victims on site at the end of this week once I have completed the required classes. I am hoping all goes well and I can travel to Mississippi and join the rescue/relief effort. It's so difficult for me to sit back and watch.
