had an insanely great day with the youngerster while the wife was out getting that o.t. pay. we played and romped around while i played every jazz record we have in the house. he showed me that he can place, not just remove the blue hoop onto the spindle of his fisher-price toy. next step is the green hoop...you should be able to figure out what i'm talking about now, this a toy that we all have probably had when we were wee ones. i found that the music libary is quite deficiant in jazz, because i was able to play all my vinyl sides in one afternoon. here's the rundown:
"this is our music", the ornette coleman group
"crescent", john clotrane quartet
"spiritual unity", albert ayler trio
"the solar-myth approach vol 2", sun ra and his solar-myth arkestra
"the celestial hawk" & "staircase", keith jarrett
"a.a.c.m.,great black music: reese and the snooth ones", art ensemble of chicago
that's like only 8 lps out of a collection of what must 500+ records
well you know what they say...quality not quantity
so i suppose i'll be making it a point to purchase more jazz in the future. anyhow i think me and the kid are gonna rock out to some scummy noise and weird punk and psyche tomarrow. mostly to help me meditate and prepare for a practice jam with some guys i've yet to meet someplace downtown. appearently one of them used to be in the seminal sicko avant punk band crust. hope all goes well.........
oh, in case you are wondering the kid digs this stuff. i don't play my child shit he doesn't like. as soon as he starts talking and begins to complain about my music picks the shit comes off the player. i want him to be happy even if that means saving the butthole surfers and sun city girls listenings for after his bedtime.

Well.. Charles Mingus is probably my favorite jazz musician. I don't know if it's because the Black Saint and the Sinner lady was the first jazz lp I ever bought, when I heard it at a record store and was so smitted that I interrupted its play-thru to buy their only display copy. Maybe it's because he packs his music with so much damned soul and was about as passionate as a musician can get.
