physics.
mmm physics. you know that so much of the world around us just wouldnt work without physics. oh okay, none of it would work. silly me.
for something so important we really seem to take it for granted. in fact, we accept the desecration of the laws of physics on a daily basis. movies. television. video games. news. i know because i've been a part of that. i have helped destroy the laws of physics in my daily routine.
call me: killer. destroyer. murderer of physical laws. this is me.
the worst part about this is when you start to argue with the director about why your make-believe physics [which are movie-physics anyway] should be the way they should be. i mean, is there anything more ludicrous than adults standing in a room in a heated debate talking about something that defy's physical laws *just by being there* and yet has to follow 'rules' which disobey physics?
hmm. confused?
okay - an analogy. imagine if you will - a space movie. lets talk about sound in space. oh we know that the real way to do a space movie is like 2001 - without audio outside - because after all, sound doesnt travel in a vacuum [besides the fact that there is nothing for sound to reflect off of so unless the person speaking was pointing directly at you or you carried around a bunch of walls wherever you went - yeah, walls -in space - anyway without any of that you couldnt hear sound anyway - its really quite amazing how directional sound *is* - apparenty yahama has this room with a net that you stand on where they test pianos and its a 'dead' room and you cant hear someone standing beside you unless they talk right AT you.. but i digress ] - okay - so space movie - sound..right.
so the director says 'okay i want it to sound like space!' and you say 'alright then - so silence - like 2001! a space opera! fantastic. we shall be artsy!'
director
no, not silence! that would be boring.
audio post guy [apg]
um, so sound then?
director
yeah! you know like space!
apg
okay, so -- you want sound of the ships - in space - but you want it to sound *like* space.
director
exactly!
apg
you realise that there is no sound in..
director
nope! no sound isnt *space-y* enough. its got to be *space-y* huge and VAST
apg
right but what does space sound like?
director
space-y!!
apg
okay - so you want it to sound like space, but its got to be big and loud
director
yeah! but its got to be accurate. you know - like its REALITY of space
apg
which would be silence..
director
no! like MORE space. bigger space. vaast space. huge empty space-ness.
think a giant concert hall
apg [rolling eyes]
well thats reverb and it signals that the walls are far away and the sound is reflecting off them.. and there is a delay and it creates reverberations and.
director
yeah! but bigger! like the biggest hugest arena/concert hall *ever*
vaaaast
apg
well the sound wouldnt bounce off anything so it would be silent..
director
no! bigger than that even! huge!
and so on ad infinitum.
this is my life.
i love my job.
