I start my new job tomorrow. I have to get up at 5:00 AM, get out on the road by 5:45 and be at work by 7:00...
This is the first job I've ever had that required more than a 10 mile commute. I'm a little nervous over the fact that I'm going to be working in the city. I've been to the city a million times by train, but I've only driven it two or three times...and I always end up getting lost. One way streets, dead ends, traffic, detours...ugh, I can't wait! Luckily my office is right off of the expressway and it's easy to get to, but I'm still going to have to travel almost 40 miles to get there and the same back home, in addition to whatever job sites I need to get to. I'm glad I get an extra $140.00 a week for gas/tolls/driving my own car.
The best thing about this job is I'll be outside a lot of the time (no stuffy warehouse and no cubicle), I'll be making $20.50 an hour with included driving bonus, and it'll give me a chance to really get to know the city better.
I hate Long Island because it's so packed and it takes me 25 minutes to drive somewhere less than 10 miles away. But the city is different, you can go anywhere you want in good time because of the subways and such, hell, you don't even need to own a car. As for me driving in the city and traffic...I don't care, because I'll be driving on the clock and getting paid to be stuck in traffic.
If anyone is curious, I'm now working for a subsidiary company of Verizon, my official title is "Plant Inspector" and basically what I do is take notes, pictures, and draw detailed scale diagrams of new/existing construction that will be interfering with Verizon's property (basically underground and overhead telephone and data lines). I also make sure the contractors do not break our lines and follow our codes when excavating.
Fun, huh? At least I'll be here and there and not stuck in one building, that's my main concern.
