Whoa! Would you like to see something simultaneously gratifying and disturbing? First, the good news:
Gallup Poll. Nov. 7-10, 2005. N=1,011 adults nationwide. MoE 3.
"Do you favor or oppose Congress passing legislation that would raise the minimum wage?"
Favor 83%
Oppose 14%
Unsure 3%
Now the disturbing part:
"Just your best guess: What is the current minimum wage rate per hour worked?"
Mean response $6.09
Median response $6.00
Note: the actual federal minimum wage is $5.15/hr, almost a dollar less than people thought it is. Moreover, most proposals only put the NEW minimum wage (should they pass) at about $6.45. In other words, Congress, and especially the president, have resisted raising minimum wages despite overwhelming national support, AND the fact that people think that even the target wage is way too low.
That is f'd up.
