1. Tell us about one of your favorite songs of all time.
-
I included this question, originally, in my 7 post gauntlet mostly for the music lovers in this community. The folks I normally get to try new music from, like @sheashannara, @skisby, @jecht, @sdawg74, @metalfreak, @silentobjectorx, and most recently, @kiley and @nebula. Plus the occasional song or two from several other great members that I certainly don't mean to snub from this post.

Forgive the staccato nature of this blog. It seemed apropos.

Now, I have a long and sordid history with music, stemming right from a very young age. My parents always listened to music (Neil Diamond, the Monkees, Eagles, and older tunes), and 2 older sisters who loved vastly different music in the 80's, and who loved to blast it through the whole house. It wasn't uncommon to hear both Poison and NKOTB at the same time. Or KISS and Shania Twain. It certainly influenced my love of music, plus helped me forge my own new paths in music, mainly heavy metal. And boy, did I get into metal. It stands as my favourite music to this day, with Megadeth being my #2 favourite band of all time. But I was also there at the birth of Grunge (Alice in Chains is my #3 favourite), Alternative and Industrial.
-
I was constantly 'trading' music with friends, listening to the radio, watching Much Music (Canadian equivalent to MTV), and doing whatever I could to get to new songs. My favourite musician was/is Gowan, and I learned to play piano so I could play music like him. At the age of 18, my first real concert was Gowan.

One day, my friend who was on a Mormon mission, came back from where he was stationed, armed with thousands of rap, Hip Hop, and Punk songs, which were genres I had never gotten into. We traded our entire music collection. In having to rename and categorize all his music, I got really into it and found lots of great tunes.
-
I then moved to Vancouver while the Grunge scene was still in full effect, and worked at a multi-media college that had music production and recording as one of the courses. I started going to live shows every evening and eventually made my own music event production company, where I promoted local talent. At my peak, I had 84 bands on my list. I have been to hundreds upon hundreds of concerts, judged contests, and even had a 4-hour special on MTV called "Smokin' Mics" that was a big battle of the MCs in Vancouver.

One night, while out hunting for new music, I went by a little bar that was advertising for the Jazz and Blues festival. The sign said it was night one of the festival, so I went in. Saw Big Bill Morganfield, who turned out to be Muddy Waters' son, and his performance alone got me deeply to blues and jazz. I was even fortunate enough to see BB King before he passed. What a great show.
-
Then I got a job working as a DJ at a strip club. You guessed it, I learned to love Dance and Techno music, even though I eventually turned the club into a rock and metal venue.
-
Finally, I moved back to Alberta and got a job at a farm and ranch supply business, the same time my mother was starting to teach Line Dancing classes. So... Country music became a staple, too. At the same time, I started learning to play guitar and my ex wife got really into Folk and Celtic music.

So, when I posted the question originally, I knew how difficult it would be for many of you to answer, because it is also very difficult for me to answer. I had several I was going to post about, but finally landed on Gowan's "The Good Catches Up," for several reasons. 1, Because Gowan has always been my favourite musician. 2. Because I am currently trying to catch up on SG finally, and 3. Because it's a message I think we could all use right now.
Please enjoy, my friends. I hope it brings you some joy. @kyrie , @penny , @missy

The Good Catches Up - by Lawrence Gowan
-
I've passed through many senseless days
And squandered love a thousand ways
Taken anger everywhere I go
Been quick to hurt, but healed so slow
-
But for every time I lent a hand
The angels played some Dixieland
With every hug and every kiss
Another hurt dropped off the list
Sometimes it was harder, and it took me longer
At times I was weak, but I always got stronger
'Cause sure as fire someday the good catches up
-
If I give it time the good catches up
It's not that far behind the good catches up
With every act of love the good catches up
The good catches up
Yes it does
The good catches up
-
With every act of love
When I care enough
Good catches up
-
You don't need a PHD
To understand these things you see
All the love that was never found
Well it's still around, yeah, it's still around
Sometimes it's harder and it may take longer
Sometimes I'm weak but I'll only get stronger
'Cause sure as fire someday the good catches up
-
With every act of love the good catches up
And when I care enough the good catches up
It's not that far behind, the good catches up
The good catches up
Yes it does
The good catches up
-
Thank you. Remember, with every act of love, the good catches up.
