It’s not my ‘favourite’ author or book, but it is certainly near the very top. If you want to check out Blog Homework Assignments you could do for yourself, go Here.
Back in mid-April, I saw a wonderful post by our friend @ojtheviking entitled “Finally starting this now reading” declaring that he was going to start reading “The Dark Tower” series by Stephen King. I was elated! It is one of my favourite series of all time and I’m so excited to hear what he thinks of them! And, really, anyone else who has read it. I am a total nerd over this series.
When I was in High School, I went through my Stephen King phase. Couldn’t get enough of his books and two of his series stand in my top 10: “The Talisman,” and “The Dark Tower.” I’ve read each multiple times and will likely read through them again some long weekend. They are just so good to me.
I first discovered “The Dark Tower” by accidently reading the 2nd book in the series “The Drawing of the Three.” It started out interesting, got dead in the middle, and ended wonderfully. I thought it was the story in its entirety and didn’t look for any other books in the series. Remember, we didn’t have the internet to check this sort of thing in the 90’s.
Then I saw that there was an upcoming book announcement in my High School Library, and one of the books listed was “The Wastelands – Stephen King’s third book in his acclaimed Dark Tower series.” Wait. What? THIRD?
An embarrassingly short investigation revealed the first book, “The Gunslinger” was in our library already. So, I signed out the first 2 books, read them that night, and eagerly awaited the third for two weeks. At this point, I started getting my friends into the books.
Third one came out and I wasn’t the first to sign it out, one of my friends was. He took nearly 2 weeks to read it and it drove me mad, but when he returned it, I was right beside him and signed it out before it could touch the counter. Read it twice that weekend and loved it so much!
Fast forward years later. Remember, this was Stephen King’s heart-project and that he took his damned time writing them.
When I was 18 or 19, my roommate and I drove up to the nearest city and each bought a copy of the fourth book “Wizard and Glass” and drove home. The jerk started reading while I was driving back! But, we got home and I caught up and passed him that night.
From then on, I was sure to buy any book in the series and read it within days. Sure, the series has lots of ups and downs, dark moments, dry spells, ridiculous scenes, et al. It also has amazing dialogue, imagery, plot twists, energy, and mysticism. A unique and beautiful fantasy series that turned the genre on its head.
I recommend giving it a shot from book 1 to 3, to see if you like it. I don’t want too reveal much about the series, but for those who know… Oy!
