I’m what you would call an Old School Gamer (or Classic Gamer or Retro Gamer), simply because I collect and play video games, regardless of their age or type.
This is by no means a judgement on any other type of Gamer or even non-Gamers. I think you should be passionate about what you love, no matter if it is cool or geeky. I will say that I have a true affection for fellow Gamers.
When I was very young, my father bought an Atari 2600 and would come downstairs and play games (Ms. Pacman and Combat) against me. That lasted about 2 weeks, until I was constantly beating him, and then he quit forever. But I was hooked.
I personally own well over 20 game playing machines, from an old Commodore, Atari and a Tandy 1000 that boasts a lot of games, including an impressive array of Sierra games, all the way to a Switch and Meta Quest 2 VR Helmet. Most currently hooked up and operational.
When people ask me; “What is your favourite game?”, I can’t help but laugh. Not because I’m being condescending, but because I can’t even pick a favourite system, much less a game on that system. With over 400 games in my collection, I couldn’t even narrow it down to top 20.
I think of times in my life and how games were such a strong part of it. Playing “Mortal Kombat” in the arcade when I was in high school and grossing out girls with finishing moves, having parties where we’d play “GoldenEye 64” and “Mario Kart 64” for the whole night. “Halo” and “Street Fighter 2” with a friend who has passed away now. Playing “Doom” across the internet for the very first time. Marvelling at the openness of “Grand Theft Auto.” Challenging Police Officers to “Dead Eye” and “Lethal Enforcers” in the arcade in the Lougheed mall in Vancouver (and winning). Blown away by being able to travel around the real world playing “Pokemon GO!” And these days, stunned by my VR games and finally back to “hanging” with my friends to play “Drunken Bar Fights.”
I still collect and play them. I’ve ‘cleared’ over half of my collection. These are my ‘newest’ games to work into my collection. Some are replacements to ones that my ex took when she left me, and some are replacements for when I was robbed a year later.
Tell me about your gaming? What games were checkpoints in your own life? What are you playing now?
I have a new-to-me console I bought that will be here in a couple of weeks. Can you guess what it is? And I know you can’t guess the game I got with it. (Don’t say anything if I told you about it)
Peace and love, my friends!
