“What qualities do you look for in a friend? Why?”
Okay. I’m a bit behind, and it is my first time writing one. (And I’m not a hopeful, but someone in this blog is.) Something occurred to me last weekend that helped to galvanize my answer.
There are so many things that can define a friend: support in the good and bad times, silly behaviour, trust, attraction, memories, experiences, etc. The list is endless.
Likewise, there are many types of friends: internet ones, in-person ones, friends with similar interests or similar hates, long-term, short term, lifelong, acquaintances and situational. And more!
This last week, I had the opportunity to spend quality time with someone who, up until then, was an internet friend whom I showed support. @darcydiamond was working for a few days nearby and we arranged to visit in person.
Going up to meet her, I didn’t really feel nervous or tense. When we finally connected, it felt more like coming home. Like we had always been friends. Call it pheromones, or body posture, or tone of voice … whatever it was, we clicked.
After we spent a really good evening chatting and taking photos and being silly in between her work, we made arrangements to do it again the next night. And then a delicious lunch. And then later that evening.
Driving home after the last visit, I had time to think about qualities you look for in a friend. The answer? Just one: They let you be you. They like who you are, either on the surface, or deep down, or because of your passion for something, or any number of things. You can be yourself and they can be themselves and both of you are completely comfortable with it.
Everything else in friendship comes from that. That first day, I met a new old friend and we were totally ok with who the other person was, and I look back on all my friendships and realize that is the only unifying factor: We genuinely like each other.
As to why? Well, easy. Because there is no greater reassurance than being yourself and someone else seeing you and still enjoying your presence. That is one of the greatest things about our community here at SG, is that we genuinely like each other.
Plus, it doesn’t hurt that all of us are Super Hot! 😏
