found it! 
bitching about things really does fix them. it had been missing for over a week when i posted that, and then we found it the next day. it was at the bottom of brian's work bag. i am sooooooo happy to have it back! though it did made me a little sad to see my pretty ring down there with a nickel, 3 paper clips and a tic-tac.
he says he didn't put it there, so *obviously* it must have fallen on the floor, rolled down the hallway, fallen down 2 flights of stairs, across the living room, hopped up on the couch and climbed in there by itself.
