Hemingway Has "Winked" at You
When people actually wrote letters and had pen pals, I remember thinking how cool that was. I don't think I was the only one. When I see movies about the past, usually there is a romantic take to letter writing, as if the content of the letter is somehow more profound written in ink and set to paper than if you just spoke the words. Somehow, words written on a keyboard and sent into cyberspace are seen as less meaningful. Less important. Disposable. Hemingway would have never posted a blog. Would he? Of course he would have. An abusive, depressed, drunk writer would certainly be posting on message boards looking, hoping for someone to connect to, someone who would understand him. How could he resist?
It's interesting how the internet has opened up the world for people who would normally be to shy to get out in the world. I know most people will debate me on this, because they don't see the faceless exchange over the computer as real communication. In my defense; people thought the same thing about phones. I've found some amazing people on the net. My boyfriend, for one. I've talked to a woman in India. A man in Alaska. I found part of my family. I've been able to talk to relatives in Germany without going broke. Downloaded music and paid my bills. I can follow random link to random link for hours, and have. Now though, I don't have the time and my internet cruising is limited to actually going places intentionally. Now I also use it to order pizza, look up a phone number and figure out what time the show is. I use it for everything.
